SMC Round 5 at Market Harborough 3/7/11

Northampton Motorcyclists Club hosted round five of the 2011 SMC Championships at Airfield Farm, Market Harborough. The popular Leicestershire circuit always produces fast and close racing, with its mix of old school and supercross sections. For this round the track had been watered and prepped perfectly, with the hot July temperatures proving an extra test for the riders.

Current series leader Dale Raynor proved unbeatable in the Expert Class taking all three wins. David Frankland and Ryan Griffiths both had the pace to run at the front but suffered a number of mistakes that kept them from winning. David finished second overall, equal on points to consistent riding Joe Wyse. In the Junior A group Jamie Scott won the first leg from Ben Huckerby. The positions were reversed in the second leg giving Ben the overall from Jamie, with Adam Collins consistently third. Andrew Lowe won both the Junior B finals from Andrew Modd with third going to Gary Shaw.

Showing none of the mishaps that scuppered his chances in the Expert class, Ryan Griffiths swept to a hat trick of wins in the Under 40 class from Darren Flitney, with Gary Shaw in third. Some of the closest action took place as usual in the Over 40 and Over 50 combined races. With all the front runners having problems at some point during the day the points were more evenly spread out than is often the case. In the Over 40 class Tony Leishman won races one and three for yet another overall, while Richard Brown took first in race two but had to settle for second overall. Fraser Law took third overall with consistent top 4 finishes. Sean Bennett won two of the Over 50 class races but a low finish in race one left him second overall. Reg Willis capitalised on the situation to take the win, Andrew Brightman drew on points with Sean but was relegated to third by the virtue of the last race position.

The two stroke class had three different race winners, Ben Huckerby, Jamie Scott and Tony Leishman. Ben and Jamie both only competed in the leg they won which left Tony to take the overall from Jack Marriott, with Louis Knibbs in third place. Andrew Green swept to a historic first win in the workers race, his early pace seeing him lead all the way to the flag.
