SMC Round 3 at Silverstone 22/5/11

Round three of the 2011 South Midland Centre Championships took place at Silverstone MX Park. Under the ever present shadow of the spectacular new £28 million Wing building, the track contrasted sharply to that of its pristine F1 neighbour. Suffering from weeks of extremely dry weather the conditions were tough for some, and despite a lot of track preparation in the days before the event it was not all of the large entry found it to their taste. Strong gusting winds meant that the circuit's massive jumps needed to be approached with some caution. Despite this the racing was close and fierce, as is the nature of such supercross inspired track designs.
James Russell made a welcome return to the club to take top honours in the Expert class. After winning races one and two, he was able to settle for second in the final battle to secure the overall. Chasing him hard for most of the day Luke Burton finished second overall. Darryl Maxwell found speed at the end of the day as others began to tire and snatched victory in the final encounter and the final step on the podium.
Unusually for the Junior A Group the lap position never changed for the first three riders in either race. Alex Meadows lead from start to finish taking both wins, from consistently runner up Chuck Davies. Chris Bick finished third on each occasion. Behind them things were more characteristically unpredictable with positions changing all the time. Jordan Hughes finished fourth overall eventually, from Jamie Scott and Jonathan Tapp. In the Junior B class the points tally between the first three was extremely close. Overall victory went to Jon Bick, ahead of Sonny Stuart and Jared Quinn.
The Over 40 class had a new winner for once. Fraser Law took start to finish wins in the first two races but settled for second in the final encounter once overall victory was secured. Perennial class winner Tony Leishman had to settle for second overall on this occasion, with Adam Collins finishing consistently third. In the Over 50 class Sean Bennett was unbeatable on his way to a hat-trick of wins. Behind him Nigel Miller and Reg Willis battled for second, with Reg taking the first race runner-up position, but Nigel heading him home on the other two occasions for second overall.
In the Under 40 class wins were reserved exclusively for riders named Jordan. Jordan Wills took wins in the first two legs, but finished second overall after sitting out the final leg. Jordan Hughes got faster all day and clinched the overall victory by winning the last race. George Winn finished third overall, again after opting to miss the final race. The 2 stroke class gave Jonathan Tapp three straight wins. Ross Gray took second in both the first and second legs, but a fifth in the final encounter dropped him to third overall after a points tie with Louis Knibbs. The next round of the SMC takes place on May 29th at Toddington hosted by L&DMCC.
