2009 SMC Championship final round- Long Buckby 18/10/09

Bathed in beautiful autumn sunshine, the Long Buckby circuit was smooth and fast for its first adult event after the summer regrading. Whilst a lot of the thirty year old bumps are gone, the track remains as challenging as ever with its natural hillside location and spectacular jumps. The event was late getting underway after the booked ambulance failed to show up, but after some frantic phone calls a replacement was eventually located. The club would like to thanks all the riders and marshals for being so understanding during the wait.
In the Expert class Michael McClurg was the man to beat. After two clear wins in the first two races it looked liking being a hattrick for Michael. However after a series of mishaps in the final race he had to settle for fourth, despite putting Ryan Griffiths under enormous pressure in the closing laps. Second overall went to Paul Burn, tying on points with Ryan but getting the second podium spot by virtue of his higher place in final leg. Mark Boswell chose to get faster as the day went on, improving with every race and winning the final encounter by some distance.
In the Junior A group Joe Wyse dominated, winning both finals as well as giving the spectators a ‘how to jump’ masterclass. Behind him second overall went to the consistent Adam Casteldine from Barry Mitchell. Despite a second place in the final race, Matt Ogden had to settle for fourth overall after falling in the opening leg whilst battling for second on the final lap. Matt Willis took the overall win in the Junior B class from second leg winner Jon Bick. Third overall went to crowd favourite Mark Bussey on his immaculate Evo Yamaha.
In the Over 40 group, Tony Leishman continued his recent championship form with three wins, despite being pushed hard by Paul Baldwin early on. Consistent finishing Richard Wright took third from Steve Gilbey who stormed to second in the final encounter. Andrew Brightman won the first of the Over 50 class races, from Reg Willis and Archie Leishman. So content were they with these positions that they decided to repeat them for the rest of the day.
The club championship only classes were restricted by the late start, but the 125 class win went to Sam Chapman, from reigning 125 class champion Adam Collins and Richard Wright.
